Richard Baker

Professor

Professor Richard Baker joined the Department of Sociology in 1973. He became a full professor in 1983. Dr. Baker has served two terms on the faculty senate and has been chair of the department. He has attended two prestigious National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminars to study social theory. The initial seminar was conducted at the University of Chicago and the second at the University of Southern California. Richard was the recipient of two Fulbright-Hays Summers Fellowships; the first was in the summer of 1994 to study the culture of Mexico in Mexico City and the second was in 1997 to study and travel in Romania and Bulgaria.

Dr. Baker was the recipient of the BSU Distinguished Service Award in 1997. The same year he received the Distinguished Contributions to Sociological Practice from the Pacific Sociological Association.. These two awards were for his work with the Hispanic community of Idaho. Richard was awarded the Larry Selland Humanitarian Award in the year 2000. He has raised nearly $100,000 for the BSU Foundation to annually fund five one thousand dollar scholarships for students attending BSU. He published two books in the 90s from his research in the Hispanic community of Idaho. They are Los Dos Mundos and Mexican American Students.
